ADVENTURES

This was an exciting week (isn’t every week of the One Room Challenge exciting?)! We get to start looking at the bones of the room coming together. Mickael helps us with the floors weeks ago, then we covered the floors to paint – we were able to uncover them this week. It was a beautiful thing to start to see the room stop looking like a construction zone. We got a visit from our friends Melissa and Dave at Old New House to look at rugs in person. What a treat! Next week, we’ll see more design elements introduced into the room.

Don’t Forget

Below Link Love there’s the list of 19 other One Room Challenge participants. That means 19 rooms that will get a make over. Follow everyone and check in each week! Everyone will post on Wednesday with the latest update, and the big reveal in 6 weeks.

Floor Refinishing Step-By-Step

  1. Remove shoe moulding (or quarter round) and vacuum area
  2. Sand with Drum Sander for heavy sanding,
  3. We stopped and tested our stain color to make sure we loved it.
  4. Sand with edger
  5. Damp mop floor and let rest overnight
  6. Finish with a square orbital sander
  7. Vacuum to remove dust
  8. Apply stain using stain application pad. This is a two person job, one person applies stain, the other wipes it in with a lint free rag. Make sure your timing in consistent and you’re in sync with your partner.
  9. Apply first coat of sealer. We used a Bona roller and Bona product. Wait 4 hours.
  10. Apply second coat of sealer using a Bona pad. Wait 4 hours.
  11. Apply third coat of sealer using a Bona pad. Done! Let cure for 5 days before heavy traffic.

Supplies
You’ll need basic household and home improvement supplies like a lint free mop, vacuum, rags, pole to attach rollers and applicators. This is a two person job that takes about 3 days, plus curing time for sealer. We rented the heavy duty equipment which costs about $250.

Drum Sander
We rented a similar sander from our local rental shop and it came with the sandpaper.

Edger Sander
We rented a similar sander from our local rental shop and it came with the sandpaper.

Square Orbital Sander
We rented a similar sander from our local rental shop and it came with the sandpaper. The one we rented looked a little different – it was square and had a single sanding pad, did the same job!

Stain
Custom mixed by Mickael.

Roller applicator for first coat, helps the product self level. This roller has a special guard to assist in proper application.

Pad applicator for remaining two coats

Some products are sponsored for the One Room Challenge. We’ll always let you know with a note by the link. If we don’t love it, it’s not in our home. We’re very particular which sponsors we choose to feature.

  1. your floors are looking SO good and i love your camera voice. loved the rug shop and agree with their philosophy.

  2. amazing!! love that you guys refinished the floor yourself and I am crazy about your wallpaper!! So super jealous and that bed is just beautiful!

Can’t wait to see the whole space completed in 2 short weeks!

LOVE the videos! Keep them coming!

  3. Betsy says:

I don’t know where to start with what I love about this room……..lets just say, everything! I can now start to see your vision for this room. Cant wait for the final reveal!

  4. Ariail says:

Why did you choose to finish the floors in such a dark color, and not a lighter wood color? It certainly gives the room a moody attitude!

  5. The floors are amazing as are all those rug choices! I love how your red satin jacket and high school prom dress led to the fabulous wallpaper. It always amazes me how distinct memories from childhood inform many design choices as adults.

  6. I really like watching you tell your room story. So impressed with your skills and the ability to work together. We have stayed married by NOT doing projects together. Love the rug story.

  7. Justynn says:

I love watching on insta-stories the updates (they’re quick and sweet!) but I would love to see some photo representation on the weekly updates on here as well as the v-log option. The v-logs are a little long- but definitely appreciate the effort.

  8. Laureg says:

I just love your blog, and am loving your one room challenge series. What a beautiful room you will have when you’re done! Also, I vote that you have your brother in law narrate, well, anything, on future videologs. French accents are just so lovely!

  9. Liz says:

The room is looking great! I appreciate that you’re not afraid to go dark with the floor stain and wall color. It’s especially nice after the blinding white minimalism trend. Susan, I really like the cut and color of the top you’re wearing. What is it?

  10. morgan says:

Wow! What a great, comprehensive tutorial. I dream of one day having a house with floors worth refinishing 😀

I am also participating in the ORC and making over my walk in closet. Check it out if you are interested: http://www.charlestoncrafted.com/2017/04/26/orc-build-custom-wooden-closet-system/
